Moonlight and Mawazo Announces Inaugural Lunar Cohort

Moonlight and Mawazo, a science fiction and fantasy short story competition, announces the inaugural Lunar Cohort of authors. These authors’ stories were selected by the competition’s editor judges for their exemplary imaginative storytelling and world creation within the target genres.

Moonlight and Mawazo strives to give authors of underserved communities, such as people of color, women, and the LGBTQ+ community, a chance to tell uniquely different stories with characters who look, sound, and otherwise reflect their lives and experiences. The founders of Moonlight and Mawazo believe “There is always room for your story.”

Moonlight and Mawazo opened submission on February 10, 2024, and the contest ran until May 10, 2024. Dozens of submissions were received from across the United States and had to be under 7,500 words. Stories submitted ranged from horror to fantasy to military science and space opera. Three winners were chosen as the 2024 “Lunar Cohort.”

The 2024 Lunar Cohort are:

Maxine Martin, author of “Breath of the Gods, Sigh of Kings”

The world is divided between two winds—one, a bitter cold from the North called The Sigh of Kings, and the other, warm and from the South, believed to be the breath of a benevolent god. To appease the cold north wind, local priests have turned to sacrifice and necromancy. In this setting, we meet Hieronymus, a young man who wants to escape the cold drudgery, but the heavens are silent, if not empty.

Nico Mason, author of “Memento Mori”

A group of childhood friends joyfully reunite to catch up and reconnect in comfortable familiarity even after years of being apart. Unexpected events quickly pull them even closer while threatening to pull them apart and will change, not only them, but the world, forever.

Paul Watson, author of “Wilhelm”

In 1925, the most powerful man in Indiana was D.C. Stephenson, the Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan and a closeted vampire. This documentary includes eyewitness interviews and reveals what happened the night Stephenson and his constituency were put on a collision course with the residents of the predominantly Black city of Wilhelm, Indiana.

Subrina Wood, co-curator of Moonlight and Mawazo, says, “I couldn’t be more pleased that our mission and goal are reflected so well in this first cohort, embracing BIPOC, the LGBTQ+ community, and women as writers and characters, heroes and villains, in stories that can only be told through their unique experiences.”
